- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1 cup milk
- 1 pound breakfast sausage
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour (for gravy)
- 2 cups milk (for gravy)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). In a mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in 1 cup of milk until just combined, being careful not to over-mix.
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and gently knead it for a few seconds. Roll out to about 1 inch thick and cut into biscuits.
- Place the biscuits on a baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes until golden brown.
- In a skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage until browned and fully cooked.
- Add 1/4 cup of flour to the cooked sausage to create a roux, mixing well.
- Gradually whisk in 2 cups of milk until smooth, stirring continuously.
- Cook the gravy until it thickens to your desired consistency, seasoning with salt and pepper.
- Serve the biscuits topped generously with the sausage gravy.
Notes
Serve warm with fried eggs or fresh fruit for a complete breakfast. Store biscuits and gravy separately; biscuits at room temperature for up to 2 days and gravy in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
